What’s the status of Henrico County Public Schools’ 3 ‘redistricting priority areas’?

Henrico, Va., Nov. 19, 2020 — Input and information sessions on three HCPS school attendance boundary “priority areas” have concluded, with one proposal put on hold and the School Board seeking further input on the other two. An update on the proposals, commonly referred to as “redistricting”:

  • At the Nov. 12 School Board meeting, members decided to postpone the proposal related to the way students are assigned to Quioccasin Middle School. It will be revisited for further public discussion in fall 2021.
  • The Board is still seeking public input on two other proposals:
    • Provide written comments anytime by using the General Feedback Form on the HCPS redistricting webpage: https://henricoschools.us/redistricting/
    • Submit written public comments specifically for the Dec. 10 School Board meeting by going to the School Board’s page: https://henricoschools.us/school-board/ (Please note that the public comments form is different than the “General Feedback Form” on the redistricting page, but all comments are carefully reviewed and considered.)
    • The Board will hold a Jan. 14 public hearing on the redistricting proposals for the two priority areas. Depending on the status of the pandemic, the public hearing may be virtual.
    • Jan. 29 (tentative): Possible School Board vote on redistricting changes.

The two ongoing proposals for implementation in fall 2021 are:

Effectively using additional capacity at Holladay Elementary School

This proposal would move some preschool students at other schools to Holladay Elementary School, which will double its capacity when a current construction project is completed. The moves would free up instructional space at Crestview, Dumbarton, Johnson, Lakeside, Longan and Echo Lake elementary schools.

Addressing overcapacity at Colonial Trail and Rivers Edge elementary schools

This proposal would address overcapacity at Colonial Trail and Rivers Edge by moving some students to other schools. Besides Colonial Trail and Rivers Edge, other schools that may be affected are Kaechele, Longan, Springfield Park, Twin Hickory and Echo Lake elementary schools.

A third proposal, for elementary feeder patterns into Quioccasin Middle School has been postponed and will be revisited in fall 2021. This proposal would realign the feeder patterns for Quioccasin Middle School, reducing from three to two the number of high schools that Quioccasin students attend. It would also reduce the number of middle schools that feed J.R. Tucker High School from five to four. Under the proposal, students at MaybeuryElementary School would attend Quioccasin Middle School instead of Tuckahoe Middle School. Students at Skipwith Elementary School, and Jackson Davis Elementary School students who live north of Three Chopt Road would attend Tuckahoe Middle School instead of Quioccasin. Colonial Trail Elementary School students who live in the Trails at Short Pump and the Crossings at Short Pump would attend Pocahontas Middle School and Mills Godwin High School instead of Quioccasin Middle School and J.R. Tucker High School.

A 2019-20 comprehensive countywide redistricting process had been scheduled to be phased in beginning this year. The School Board announced in April that it would delay that process to allow the community to focus on the public health crisis. In September, the Board announced that it would discontinue the comprehensive process and focus instead on solutions for the three specific areas of concern described above.

An important message for families of students who use bus transportation

This is an important message for families of students who use bus transportation:

First day of school is almost here! Our drivers have been working hard to rehearse their routes and make sure Sept. 3 is the beginning of a great week. With that in mind, we ask for your patience next week as some buses may experience delays. Here’s why, along with answers to some other frequently asked questions.

What can I expect during the first week of school?

Thousands of Kindergarten and preschool students are riding a school bus for the very first time. We take extra care with these students, such as requiring authorized adults to show ID in order to get them off the bus in the afternoon. Afternoon delays are inevitable as parents become accustomed to our process, and as our drivers meet many of these families for the first time. In limited instances, bus delays may become very lengthy on the first couple of days, but those delays should quickly shorten as everyone gets used to the new routine.

We also realize that the first week of school can often be filled with emotional moments and “must get” photo opportunities. Sometimes this will result in buses being behind schedule.

Where can I find bus information?

Bus stop information is now available on our website as well as through Rycor Online Forms and PowerSchool. We recommend students be at their morning bus stop five minutes before the bus is scheduled to arrive. Please review bus stop safety procedures and follow the direction of bus drivers.

Will you let me know if the bus is running 10-15 minutes late?

Pupil Transportation staff makes every effort to notify parents of significantly late buses through School Messenger text messages. For more information on our automated communication methods, click here to visit the Communications and Community Engagement page 

What if I need to call someone in the Transportation department?

If you would like to speak to someone in our Transportation department, you can do that too by calling one of our zone offices. Henrico is a big county that is served by several different transportation zones. To find the zone office that is responsible for your student’s school, click here.

How do I make a formal request regarding my student’s transportation?

Transportation staff receives hundreds of written requests from parents in September. Parents should complete the “School Bus Request Form,” also linked on the web page.  Priority will be placed on assigning new or recently moved students. Requests for changes to bus stop locations will be addressed as a lower priority.

Henrico Schools using “Anonymous Alerts” system to improve communication about safety concerns

What is Anonymous Alerts?

The Anonymous Alerts safety and anti-bullying reporting system helps combat negative activity in schools by empowering students to speak up. Social and peer pressure are some of the hardest obstacles for students to overcome.

The system allows for one-way or two-way anonymous encrypted communication between those submitting reports (students, parents or community members) and school division administration and staff members. System users have the option to remain anonymous or reveal their identity when submitting a report.

How does it work?

To use the new app, students, parents or others simply visit the Henrico County Public Schools website and click on the “Anonymous Alerts” button or the text link to submit a report expressing a concern. Anonymous Alerts apps can be downloaded directly from the Apple, Google Play or Chrome stores.

Users enter Henrico Schools’ Anonymous Alerts activation code – Henrico – and select the school to which the message should go. Informational posters explaining how to use the system will be displayed in HCPS schools and offices.

To send reports from the internet, go to: https://report.anonymousalerts.com/henrico.

To send a report from your phone:

  • Download the free Anonymous Alerts app from the Apple Store, Google Play store or Chrome store.
  • Launch the app and enter the activation code, Henrico.
  • Send important reports to school officials.
  • If desired, add a screenshot, photo or video about the incident.

Community Foundation needs your help to identify region’s outstanding teachers

Henrico, Va. Jan. 17, 2019 – Who is the special teacher in your life? The REB Awards for Teaching Excellence provide a tangible, public way to recognize outstanding teachers in Henrico County Public Schools – and give them the means to continue growing. The Community Foundation’s yearly awards identify, recognize and support teaching excellence in the Richmond area. Honorees receive professional development grants of $4,000 to $12,000, given to teachers who have distinguished themselves by their inspiring classroom performance.

Through a nomination process, approximately 15 outstanding teachers are selected each year to receive cash grants to support professional development activities.

Nominations are invited from parents, students, educators and the community at large. Award recipients have earned graduate degrees, climbed mountains, traced their ancestors and met peers from around the world – all to reignite their own passion for learning and to pass it on to their students.

Nominations must be made online. A letter in support of the nomination must be written by another individual and submitted online with the nomination.

Who:The Community Foundation invites nominations from students, parents, colleagues, school staff and administrators (except for the school principal), and the community at large.
 

When: Nominations and letters of support must be submitted by Feb. 25 at 5 p.m.
